Sam Altman Announces Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT Plus Users

Earlier this year in May, OpenAI introduced the new Voice Mode alongside its latest large language model, GPT-4o.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, introduced its latest language model, GPT-4o, earlier this year, emphasizing its multimodal capabilities and the AI model’s ability to engage in real-time conversations.

Last month, OpenAI mentioned that the new Voice Mode would only be available after passing certain internal safety and reliability checks. They promised that the enhanced Voice Mode would be accessible to ChatGPT Plus subscribers sometime in July.

Today, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the highly anticipated GPT-4o-powered Voice Mode would be available in alpha next week for paid subscribers. Currently, ChatGPT's Voice Mode is hindered by delayed responses, with the existing version having an average latency of 2.8 seconds for GPT-3.5 and 5.4 seconds for GPT-4. In contrast, GPT-4o promises virtually no delay.

Additionally, the new Voice Mode won’t be available to all ChatGPT Plus users until the fall. Last week, OpenAI introduced GPT-4o mini, a streamlined version of its latest language model, which is reportedly more capable than GPT-3.5 Turbo. OpenAI also recently announced a new AI-powered search engine, SearchGPT, which will eventually be integrated with ChatGPT.
